海外に駐在する際に気になるのが、現地での生活です。特に家族で海外赴任する場合は、本人だけでなく、奥様やお子さんのケアも重要です。そこで、本日は、オハイオ州でお勤めのご主人を支えるRumiko Satohさんに、オハイオ州での生活ぶりについてインタビューを行いました。

家族構成：夫、大学生の娘、高校生の息子の４人家族
―渡米のきっかけを教えて下さい。
２００３年の春、主人の駐在に伴い、家族でオハイオ州へ移動しました。
当時は、今のように、ネットがそれほど普及しておらず、前任者の方からの情報が全てでした。なので、情報がほとんど無いに等しい状態で渡米した感じです。
―そういう状況で渡米されたとなると、オハイオに住んだ当時は苦労されたんじゃないですか？
はい、苦労しました。
一つ目は気候です。夏の酷暑、冬の極寒に、体が馴染めず、初年度は、家族全員がダウンする、という状況でした。あとは、ありきたりですが、言葉が通じない（私自身は、中学生・高校生が学ぶ程度の英語力でした）事と、日本の食料品が思い通り手に入らなかったことは、苦労しました。あと、仕組みの全く違う学校の行事や、保険制度が無い、米国の病院事情にも、慣れるまで苦労しました。
―言語で苦労したとのでしたが、オハイオで生活するにあたり、英語はどの程度必要ですか？
英語が出来ることに越したことはありません(笑)。
もちろん、その人の立場で違うと思いますが、主婦だから英語力が不要、という事はありません。やっぱり学校のこともありますし、病院のこともあります。ただ、”英語力”と言うよりも、”知らない土地で生きていく”という、度胸の方が必要なのではないか、と思います。

―オハイオやコロンバスには日本人コミュニティはありますか？
私の住む街にも日本人コミュニティはあります。
オハイオ州には日系企業もたくさんありますし、駐在だけでなく、国際結婚、永住の方もいらっしゃいます。どこの土地にも、大なり小なり、日本人のコミュニティーはあると思います。少人数ですが、私の住む、小さな町でも、日本人同士で集まります。コロンバスには、日本人が多く住むエリアもあります。
―オハイオでの食生活を教えてください。
やっぱり日本人なので、日本食中心の食生活ですね。
とはいえ、調味料や日本独特の食材(乾物や魚介類など）は、高額ですし、すべてが手に入るわけではありません。もちろん、コロンバスなどの中心部に行けば、日本食スーパーもあるので、それなりには手に入ります。とはいっても、先に書いた通り、高額なので、出来るだけ現地のものを使いながら、工夫しているのが現実です。
―オハイオに住んでみてよかったことを教えてください。
家族でいる時間が多く持てたことでしょうか。
オハイオに限らず、アメリカ全般に言えることですが、日本と違い、公共交通機関が発展していないので、どこに行くにも、自家用車が必要です。また、子供たちは、自転車で移動、という事もないので、子供の行動にも親が同行します。子供が車の免許を取るまでは、そんな生活なので、おそらく、日本で生活するより、”家族でいる時間”が圧倒的に多くなります。
日本に居たら、おそらく、子供が大きくなると、家族の中でも個人個人になってしまうのでしょうが、米国にいたおかげで、家族が一緒にいる時間が多くできた、と言うことが、よかったことと思っています。
―これからオハイオにいらっしゃる方々にメッセージをお願いします。
苦労することはたくさんありますが、『住めば都』です。
日本国内だろうが、海外だろうが、”引っ越し”という点では、変わらないと思います。人と人の繋がりですし、言葉が通じなくても、いい人はいい人で、嫌な人は嫌な人なのです。
幸い、私は、ご近所の方にも、学校の先生にも恵まれ、とてもよくしてもらい、たくさん助けてもらい、今までやってきました。不安はたくさんあると思いますが、何とかなります。なりました。
ただ、自分たちは、外国人で、危機意識は無くしてはいけないと思います。
